Ajmer is the 5th largest city in rajasthan. It was founded by Ajayraj Singh Chauhan of Chauhan dynasty which ruled the area for several decades hence it was earlier known as Ajaymeru. Prithviraj Chauhan and Hemraj Vikramaditya(hemu) were some of the famus ruler of Ajmer in History.

Ajmer is surrounded by the Aravali Mountains. The city is situated on the lower slopes of the Taragarh Hill in the Aravali Range.

Ajmer is famous for the Shrine of Sufi Saint Khwaja Moinuddin Chishti and also for the Holy Pushkar Town famous for Brahma Temple and Sacred Lake. To the north of the city is a large artificial lake called Anasagar Lake with a marble structure known as Baradari. Taragarh Fort is another tourist attraction in the city.

Ajmer is at a distance of 140km from Jaipur and 390 km from Delhi/NCR from north and Udaipur (270km), Ahmedabad(525km) from South on the Golden Quadrilateral National Highway 8 (NH 8) which is one of the best 4 lane highways in the country. Also the Ajmer - Jaipur expressway is a 6 lane highway. So the best way to reach Ajmer is by road on your own vehicle or by hired taxies or by buses available to Ajmer from Delhi or any city of rajasthan. Alternatively Ajmer is a main railway station between Delhi Ahmedabad. By air the nearest airport is Jaipur International Airport connected to all parts of India.

Dargah Sharif is the tomb of famous Sufi saint Khwaja Moinuddin Chishti. Akbar and his queen used to come here by foot on pilgrimage from Agra every year in observance of a vow when he prayed for a son.Today Dargah Sharif si visited by thousands of devotes every day. A gate with silver doors forms the entrance of the site.The actual tomb of the saint is enveloped by a silver railing and a marble screen. This has been made of marble and a gold plated dome. Every year ‘Urs’ is held here for six days

Taragarh Fort is the fort guarding Ajmer, was the seat of the Chauhan rulers. It is reputed to be one of the oldest hill forts in India and the world. It was built by King Ajaypal Chauhan on the summit of Taragarh Hill and overlooks Ajmer. The walls are 3km in circumference and the fort can only be approached by way of a very steep slope.

The prime attraction of Pushkar is the Pushkar Lake which is considered sacred like the Mansarovar Lake in Tibet. Pushkar has become a place of Hindu pilgrimage because of this holy lake. Legend has it that this lake was consecrated to Lord Brahma, the creator of the universe when a lotus dropped from his hand into the vale and a lake emerged in that place a dip in the lake is a must for Hindu pilgrims .
