Bandipur National Park is situated in the Chamarajanagar district in Karnataka near the border with Tamilnadu and Kerala.It is 80km from Mysore and is on the route to another major tourist destination Ooty hill station.  The park spans an area of 874 square kilometers and was previously a 90 sq km private hunting place established by Maharaja of Mysore in 1931.Govt of India established it as a Tiger Reserve in 1973 under Project Tiger plan.

The altitude of the park ranges from 2,230 ft to 4,770 ft so there are many varieties of trees and animals that can be found here. The park is famous for its tigers, elephants and protected sandalwood trees and is one of India's most delightful wildlife sanctuaries.

People of Karnataka and nearby states prefer to come to Bandipur National Park by road either in their own vehicle or by taxi. Bangalore is the major city near the park at 220km and is the nearest Airport connected to all places in India. The drive takes around 5 hours from Bangalore to reach the park via Mysore (90km).People coming from outside Karnataka should come by air or by train to Bangalore and then hire a taxi to the national park or can take state transport bus to reach the park. Some of the young adventure seekers prefer to cruise on their bikes to the park. The park can be visited throughout the year avoiding the heavy rainy season during monsoon.
