Shri Hemkund Sahib is situated in the Himalayan mountain of uttarakhand and is an important pilgrimage destination for sikh devotees. According to legends, during the time of 'Sat Yug' (the age of truth), the goddess Durga was once engaged in a battle with demons who had been terrorizing humans and gods alike. Seeking help, she fled to the mountains and came upon a great rishi (sage) who agreed to be of assistance to her. Since he was a brahman and could not be involved in a battle, he created a khattri (warrior) who could combat the demons. The khattri, clad in a lions skin and armed with a sword, slayed the demons after a fierce battle. Greatly pleased, the goddess Durga blessed him and conferred upon him the name Dusht Daman (the suppressor of evil). Where after, the rishi asked him to meditate at Hemkund which was the site for meditation for many celestials. Hence, Dusht Daman performed an intense and prolonged meditation. He was then summoned by the Almighty to undertake the task of being reborn in 'kal yug' (the age of darkness) to ward off evil from the face of the earth. Thus, in his reincarnation, Dusht Daman was born as the son of the ninth guru, Guru Tegh Bahadur. The child guru grew up to be a great saint and a warrior. He was the tenth guru Guru Gobind Singhji. Guru Govind Singhji mediated on the serene banks of Hemkund lake and the Gurudwara on the banks of Hemkund lake is located at the place where he meditated. Sri Hemkunt Sahib has emerged as a popular centre of Sikh Pilgrimage which is visited by thousands of devotees from all over the world every summer.

Shri Hemkund Sahib  is reached from the nearest motorable small town of Govindghat after a trek of around 16km. Govindghat is very well connected by road to all parts of Uttarakhand with regular bus services. If you are coming from outside Uttarakhand you need to first reach Haridwar which is the nearest railway station well connected to all major cities of India. Direct buses to Haridwar are also available from Delhi as well as other major towns of north India. From Haridwar Govindhghat is around 300kms. The most convenient way is to hire a taxi which can take you to Govindghat via devpriyag , rudrapriyag, karnprayag, nandpriyag and Joshimath. If you like driving and good at it on extreme hilly roads you can follow the same route. From Govindghat a trek of 14km surrounded by greenery and scent of flowers you reach Gangaria which is another small settlement and is used by the pilgrims as a base camp for stay and night halt before proceeding to Hemkund Sahib. This path can be covered either by walk or by pony and a Gurudwara here gives shelter to pilgrims. In addition there are a few hotels and a camp ground with tents and mattresses. From Gangaria a 3,600 ft climb on a 6km of stone paved path leads to Hemkund. Overnight stay is not allowed at Hemkund Sahib and so it is necessary to start early and leave by 2 PM to make it back to Govindghat by nightfall. The place remains closed during winters due to severe cold conditions and snowfall. It is open for pilgrimage only during summer from June to October.
