The city of Jaisalmer is located on the westernmost frontier of India in the state of Rajasthan surrounded by the great Indian THAR desert.  Jaisalmer is named after Maharawal Jaisal Singh, a Rajput king who founded the city in 1156. "Jaisalmer" means "the Hill Fort of Jaisal". Jaisalmer is sometimes called the "Golden City of India" because the yellow sand and the yellow sandstone used in the architectures of the city gives a yellowish-golden tinge to the city and its surrounding area. In old days Jaisalmer was positioned strategically on the main trade route linking India to Egypt and Arabia. The Bhati Rajput rulers of Jaisalmer used to collect taxes on these caravans carrying spices, silk, grains and other merchant items through this route. Because of the trade route Jaisalmer produced a number of wealthy Merchants who used to do trade to the world from Jaisalmer and trading was the main reason of prosperity of the town. But after independence and then partition of India and Pakistan the trade channel was completely shut down.

Now in recent times Jaisalmer has again become a prominent town but this time because of tourism.
