Officially called Ootacamund, this tourist hub in the Nilgiri Hills of Tamil Nadu, is better known by its nickname, Ooty, given by the British. The nearest railhead is Mettupalyam, 40 km from Ooty. There are trains from Chennai, Coimbatore, Mysore and Bangalore connecting Mettupalyam. From here on, you can also board the heritage train known as the Nilgiri Mountain train which takes you uphill on an exciting journey. However, if you wish to reach faster, take a taxi from the railway junction. Approximately 88 km away, Coimbatore is the nearest domestic airport from Ooty which is well-connected with most of the Indian cities. Ooty is a major tourist attraction of South India. You will get both government and luxury buses from Bangalore, Mysore and Chennai to Ooty. These are overnight buses and the journey is quite comfortable. If you love driving then drive to Ooty in your own vehicle , the best part of a road trip to Ooty is that you drive through the reserve forest area and stunning scenery, and that surely is some experience. Botanical garden Ooty
Ooty Botanical Garden, spread over a huge area of 22 hectares and with more than 650 species of flowers and trees, is a horticulturist’s delight. A wide variety of exotic and ornamental plants adorn this garden. There is also a beautiful Italian floral garden and for those who simply want to relax, there's always the green carpet of the well-maintained lawns. Another attraction here is the Toda tribe settlement towards the top of the garden. Here, they sell Shawls embroidered by Todas, tea, spices and the famous oils of the Queen of the hills.
Ooty lake Ooty
One of the main attraction among tourists in Ooty is the Ooty lake , which is an artificial lake constructed by John Sullivan, the founder of Ooty, in 1824. The entire lake is surrounded by eucalyptus trees. A great place for eveing walk people also enjoy boating in this lake which can be hired from the boat club. Also there is a deer park and children park nearby where children’s can enjoy toy train rides.
Rose garden Ooty
Roses can be also in green or black color! If you thought that roses are only red then visit rose garden of Ooty. Rose garden is an encyclopedia on roses here you get to see all the varieties of roses different in sizes as well as color. Rose Garden covers around 10 acres of land and comprises terraces with pergolas, rose tunnels and bowers with rose creepers. There are around 3600 varieties of roses in this garden. This garden was recognised as the ‘Garden of Excellence’ by the World Federation of Rose Societies (WFRS).
Nilgiri toy train Ooty
The Nilgiri Mountain Railway built by the British in 1908 is a World Heritage Site. It’s a 46-kilometre beautiful toy train journey that starts from Mettupalayam and goes through tunnels, curves, bridges and beautiful scenery to reach Ooty in five hours. Any tourist who comes to visit Ooty wants to travel by this train.From 300 feet to 7200 feet, the Ooty toy train is definitely a ride to cherish. Try to sit on the side that looks out in to the valley for the best views on the way up. Keep your camera ready for a few memorable shots of the valley and picturesque landscapes.
Doddabetta peak Ooty
Doddabetta Peak is the highest vantage point in Ooty, at around 2,623 m. This peak is regarded as one of the highest peaks in South India.The beautiful valley, plains of Coimbatore and the flat highlands of Mysore are visible from this point.
The Tamil Nadu Tourism Development Corporation manages a Telescope House in the Doddabetta Peak which enables the visitors to get a better view. This TTDC Telescope House gives a complete view of the surrounding landscape. There is also a TTDC restaurant, which caters to the taste of the visitors. Tourists can also indulge in trekking here.
